Official Launch of the School Competition “Toilets Making the Grade” in Uganda
In collaboration with GIZ Uganda team of the global project “Sanitation for Millions” (S4M), German Toilet Organization (GTO) celebrated the official launch of the second edition of the school competition “Toilets Making the Grade”. Until March 2020, Kampala’s schools are called upon to develop and implement their own concepts for keeping school toilets clean.
The school competition “Toiletten Machen Schule”, originally developed by GTO for schools in Germany, was adapted to the conditions in Uganda and Pakistan in cooperation with local partners (Kampala Capital City Authority and Balochistan Rural Support Programme) and S4M and successfully implemented in both countries for the first time in the school year 2018/19.
The Parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Mr. Norbert Barthle, has now officially taken over the patronage of the international school competitions that aim at improving the sanitary situation in schools and, in his function, would like to place this globally taboo topic at the centre of society.
The school competitions were launched with the participation of the Kampala Capital City Authority, representatives of the Ugandan Ministry of Education and Kampalas Schools, and the GIZ at Kitante Primary School, a public school where some 3,000 pupils are taught. As part of the programme, certificates from a recent data collection on sanitation in schools will be presented.
