Toilets Making the Grade

Toilets Making the Grade Cover
Why

“Toilets Making the Grade” (TMG) is a methodology aiming at activating school actors to improve their school’s sanitation with minimal external input. It is a school competition that triggers teamwork between management, administration, parents, pupils and maintenance staff to hand in the best contribution among all participating schools. The teams receive an inspirational packet with methods to analyse their school sanitation challenges and formulate their own solutions. The school(s) with the most suitable solutions wins the competition.

Many of these solutions target operation and maintenance of school WASH facilities, like blocked toilet pipes or provision of soap.

Ideally the competition takes place through the government, achieving a new perspective of school WASH through the preparation and judging process.

The methodology was developed by German Toilet Organization (GTO). It can be adapted to different contexts. TMG piloted in Uganda and Pakistan in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
